As we have mentioned before in this post, IPL Photo-Rejuvenation can help with sun-damaged skin, skin discolorations and general improvement with skin texture. IPL technology have successfully treated brown spots (age spots, liver spots) and pigmentation, photo aging (rough texture, red and brown discolorations), face veins (telangiectasias), redness and brown mottled pigmentation on the face, neck, chest, arms and hands, Rosacea and actinic keratoses (pre-cancers) and warts. The recovery time is minimal without the burns and blisters that go along with some other treatments.
One such device that allows you to do an IPL treatment at home is the CLARO SX IPL Skin Clarifying System. It is an effective way to treat your acne with a combination of both heat and light to give you a much younger, clearer and blemish-free looking skin.
Last time MyShimmer covered whether Yaz birth control actually helps reduce acne, but Yaz is still a radical choice for many as it is, after all, a presciption drug that is originally intended for something else. So this time we are going to talk about a home remedy for acne that is cheap and completely DIY — sea salt.
Sea salt is less expensive, easy to find , and a truly natural and chemical free acne treatment. If you have tried benzoyl peroxide and have allergic reactions to the chemicals, this might be the right solution for you.
Putting salt on my wounds… why?
Sea salt has very high content of magnesium, iodine, zinc, and calcium, making it ideal for anti-inflammation purposes. Have you ever gone swimming in the ocean with a wound on your skin and experienced a painful burning sensation? Sea salt actually speeds up the wound healing process by burning the tissues, forcing the body to heal faster. While floating in the sea in order to heal your wounds isn’t exactly the smartest thing to do because of all the bacteria in the water, using purified sea salt is a cheap, fast, perhaps slightly painful yet definitely effective way of cleansing and disinfecting small wounds.
How do I use sea salt to treat acne?
Facial exfoliation Sea salt is ideal for exfoliation because the grains help slough off dead skin from the surface of your face while promoting health natural excretion of facial oil. Many exfoliation creams on the market are packed with chemicals that rub off dead skin but leave your skin flaky and excessive dry.
what you need: coarse sea salt, water 1. Put 3 tablespoons of coarse sea salt in a mixing bowl, then add double the amount of water.Adding water adds moisture into the sea salt and makes it easier to be rubbed into your skin.
2. Moist your face with splashes of water. Gently rub the grains on your face — pay extra attention to dry spots to fasten the emerging of new skin. Don’t be too rough though, coarse sea salts could actually scratch your face if you apply too much force.
3. Left the salt on your face for 3–5 minutes after your entire face has been exfoliated.
4. Rinse with warm water, and gently pad dry your skin. Remember to apply toner or moisturizer to keep your skin soft and hydrated.
Sea salt face wash Breakout before a big date! It is certainly tempting to apply an inch of acne cream on your spots and pray that it would dry the acne up faster — well it usually works, but it would also dry up your skin and leave it flaky and itchy afterward. Sea salt has the same function of treating acne breakout by killing off bacteria and fastening the healing process, but it doesn’t irritate your skin the way acne cream often does.
What you need: sea salt, water, mild facial cleanser
1. Warm up a cup of water with microwave, add 1–2 teaspoon of sea salt and stir until it completely dissolves.
2. Wash your face thoroughly with a mild facial cleanser.
3. Soak a face towel in the salt water solution and lay the towel across the acne you want to treat for 5–7 minutes. There’s no need to apply pressure.
4. Wash your face with warm water and apply toner and moisturizer to keep skin hydrated.
5. Repeat twice a day until acne clears up.
A few things to keep in mind…
Purchase sea salt and avoid using regular table salt. Table salt is often treated with chemicals and might irritate your skin.
Remember to apply toner or moisturizer after each sea salt treatment to keep skin hydrated. Dry skin could lead to an excessive secretion of oil on the surface of your skin, which might end up making your acne worse.
Excessive use of sea salt on your skin could lead to flakiness and irritation. Avoid cuts and wounds.
Consult your dermatologist if you have any allergic reactions.
If you have delicate skin, you may want to try this at only the infected area, and massage gently to prevent over-exfoliating the skin.

I know I know birth control pills are not supposed to be about stuff other than birth control, but since Yaz started advertising itself as a treatment for Acne, everyone got curious about whether it can actually help reduce Acne. MyShimmer did a little research and found that it is a little more complicated than a yes-or-no question.
For its main function Yaz (ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone) is in fact a typical hormonal contraceptive that has “24/4″ regimen that has been FDA approved for the treatment of PMDD and guess what, acne! We are not going to go into the details of PMDD, but for those of you who aren’t familiar with it, it’s a shorthand of Premenstural Dysphoric Disorder, i.e. the general crappiness that a lot of us girls feel prior to our period every month. But let’s dive into Yaz’s claim that it helps with acne and explore whether it’s actually the case.
Why does Yaz say It Helps Reduce Acne?
So what exactly in Yaz that is supposed to help reduce acne? To answer this question we have to tackle the good old question of what actually causes acne in the first. Acne is often it’s about the hormonal balance of your body and your entire system. Over-activity of the sebaceous (oil-producing) glands causes too much oil to be produced on the skin, and when it is combined with a build-up of dead skin cells it starts clogging your pores, which in turns traps even more excess oil underneath your skin. This sticky warm oily envionment is perfect for bacteria to multiply and irritate your skin, and that’s when you get what we all hate the most — acne.
Alright, so what about Yaz that could help this situation? The magic chemical is dropirenone. People with a higher level of androgen — a male hormone that promote the development of masculine characteristics — tend to have larger sebaceous glands and a high level of oil production on their skin. What dropirenone does is that it counteracts the action of androgen in women, and helps reduce the effects of over-stimulated sebaceous glands. As simple as that.
So does Yaz REALLY reduce acne?
Fine, so after all that talk, Yaz should be the perfect treatment for acne right? Well… nope. If you go ask a dermatologist he/she will tell you there are different types of acne, and just about a zillion possible causes behind the formation of acne. The causes of acne range from stress to weather to your diet to a lack of face scrubbing, and not necessarily androgen. If the main cause of your acne is NOT androgen disorder but other underlying causes, taking Yaz will not make a difference, and at the same time you might to need to endure the advertised side effects of Yaz. So if you have in mind to start taking Yaz as a treatment for your acne problems, make a trip to your dermatologist and get a professional medical consultation.
Well bottom line:
Does Yaz help reduce acne?
– Yes, and no. It entirely depends on what kind of acne that you have. Androgen acne can be reduced by the dropirenone in Yaz, but if you are suffering from other kinds of acne, Yaz might not be the right solution for you.
Should I take Yaz as an acne treatment?
– There are thousands of acne treatment options out there that don’t involve the same kind of side effects you might experience when you are on Yaz. Advertised side effects include decreased sex drive, headaches, weight gain, nausea and vomiting, high blood pressure, high cholestorol, etc. Consult your dermatologist on your acne problem and whether you should try other types of treatment

I was in Daiso, a Japanese retailer of cool products and there was a small beauty section. The beauty section had an assortment of hard to find face rollers. The Japanese are renowned throughout the world for products that are high quality, have great design and attention to price.
It has been an Asian urban myth of massaging your face or using a face roller for younger, firmer skin without wrinkles. My friend’s mother swears by her daily massage using her fingers with lotion. Her mother looks like her sister rather than her mother with her youthful face.
Japanese Face Roller
So I purchased this face roller at my Japanese “Target” store, Daiso for $1.50. The Daiso online store sells 12 pieces for $22.
What is the science or reason behind stimulating your face to reduce wrinkles and help with acne/scars?
Micro needling is a procedure at a professional dermatologist’s office where a device is rolled over your face and body. The Microneedling Roller is a easy to use device with many sterilized tiny needles which, {when rolled over the epidermis or top layer of skin}, delicately separate the pores of the epidermis and induce the healing process increasing the production of collagen and elastin. In essence, the stimulation of the skin causes your skin to “naturally heal” itself.
Aging skin heals and rejuvenates itself more slowly than the 2–4 week cycle of younger skin. Skin with scars and other skin conditions also heal faster with this extra collagen resulting from stimulation from any of these devices that roll over your skin and irritate the top layer.
For acne scars, Stretch marks and face wrinkles to be removed, it is essential for the skin to have reason to restart healing itself producing more collagen and elastin, micro needling achieves this by gently opening the pores of the epidermis giving the impression of a trauma on the skin and in need of repair. Micro needling or using rollers may help with the following: Stretch marks, Cellulite, Wrinkles, pitted skin, acne scars, surgery scars, scars, crow’s feet.
The effects do not appear to have clinical trials or scientific evidence but rather a plausible theory. Studies have shown that men age less and have smoother skin in their beard area which is physically exfoliated regularly. This physical exfoliation (or stimulation) may help the skin regenerate naturally to keep the skin looking more youthful.
Dermaroller also has a faceroller or micro needing product for 99 Euros.

Summer is here and it’s getting hotter by the day. I was blessed with fairly oily skin and summer time is when I have my annual battle with sweat, humidity, and yes, acne. During a conversation the other day with my friend Jodi, who studied Chinese medicine, she shared with me one of the best kept beauty secrets that might just help us get rid of this summer acne problem once and for all: the bitter melon drink.
My immediate response was: “Bitter melon? What is that?”
Bitter melons are academically known as Momordica charantia and they are widely popular in South and Southeast Asia. They are considered the bitterest of all vegetables, but this very bitter taste turns out to be of great medicinal uses. It stimulates digestion, improves immunity, and most importantly, reduces inflammation. Jodi explains to me that in Chinese medicine, inflammation is seen to be a symtom of excessive “heat” in the body. Such excessive might be caused by the humid summer weather or our own mental stress, and when that happens, our body dynamics go off balance and begin sending off signals like, well, acne. In stimulating digestion and modulating inflammation, bitter melons act as a “cooling agent” to channel this heat out of our bodies.
The bitter melon drink is easy to make, and surprisingly tasty. Here are the ingredients you need to prepare:
1 to 1 1/2 bitter melon, depending on how bitter you like your drink to be
3–4 sticks of celery
1 apple
1 green pepper
2 carrots
Directions
1. peel off the skin of the apple and carrots.
2. Cut all the veggies into long, thin sticks
3. Leave veggies in water for 4–5 hours — so that they will be clean, and soaked with water
4. for the best effects, put the veggies into the fridge for 2–3 hours before juicing them
5. Juice the veggies with electric juicer. The amount of veggies mentioned above could give 2 big mugs of juice. Stir before drinking for better taste.
Evaluation
Effects
I have been trying this recipe for the past couple of days and I have to say that I love the outcomes. It’s not fancy, it’s cheap, and it’s all natural — no matter how natural your juice boxes say and how much vitamin C and such they say they have, juicing your own fruit juice is still the best way to go. After having a mug every day for a week or so, I do feel my body is more “in balance” — it’s a vague description I know, but generally I feel healthier. I feel less bloated after a big meal, and my digestion is better. This general feeling is showing on my skin as well — this huge zit actually disappeared after dominating my chin for days! My skin is less greasy and generally, I just feel like my body is working smoother. So yes, I have to say that this bitter melon drink works wonders.
Taste
I can barely taste the bitterness of the bitter melon because the carrots almost completely dominate the taste (and carrots are great to help fade acne scars!), so it’s great news for those who don’t like their juice bitter.
All in all…
What is it good for
Summer acne, indisgestion (trust me that shows on your skin!), constipation, ulcers, acne scars
Why should I try it
It’s cheap, natural, and easy to prepare. Great to have with breakfast before a day’s work. And did I mention it tastes good too?
Tips
If you can’t find bitter melons in your local supermarket, you should be able to to find them from Asian supermarkets or specialty stores. And they aren’t expensive, either.
Money wise
<$4 per glass
Downside
Taking 20 minutes or so a day to make juice might be a hassle to some people, but hey, it’s your skin and your body, so your decision
