Going Big on Hair at the Oscars

Naturally every “expert” out there has managed to find a way to interject their opinion regarding the stars walking the red carpet at the Oscars.  And, while the following opinions are by no means from an expert, sometimes I don’t think an expert is actually required to make a decision on what does and does not look appealing.

With that, the un-official, un-expert but very opinionated list of stars with good hair that were spotted on the red carpet.

What will it be the low-slung bun or the messy up-do?  Long lean and straight or big waves of curl, which will it be?  You decide:

Maybe I’m partial but after seeing Kathy Ireland in person, hearing her speak and then admiring her beauty here, I imply think this is the best of the best of the best at the 2010 Oscars where hair is concerned.

Ceramic vs Tourmaline vs Titanium Flat Irons

If you’re like most women, you probably wish for hair that is the opposite of what you were born with. In my case, I was born with naturally wavy hair and since I bought my first straightening iron in the 1990s, it has become my best friend; but with all the different kinds of irons on the market, how do you pick just one?

Katherine wears wears this updo to the side with part of her hair swept back and pinned.  It works well for an elegant evening out, and it’s best suited to longer face shapes.

Taylor Swift wears this celebrity hair style updo with gorgeous color and with soft romantic curls.  This celebrity hair updo is perfect for a wedding or a special dinner.

Jessica Alba loves this elegant hairstyle updo so much that she has worn it several times to red carpet Hollywood events.  She wears this hairstyle well allowing her to show off her beautiful drop earrings.  This celebrity hairstyle can be done with a few bobby pins and flat iron to curl your hair.

We caught up Christmas week with Richelle De Veras who creates this look for many of her clients.  Richelle is a hairstylist from one of San Francisco’s leading hair salons, Alcheme Salon .   Having been a model since the age of 13, she is one of Alcheme’s leading hairstylist working in San Francisco for over 10 years and a makeup guru as well.   She spends her free time creating DIY classic hairstyles that women can recreate by themselves at home without a beauty degree.   Each movie star has stylists but some of the celebrity hairstyles are either too difficult to replicate or just not practical on many women’s hairs.  In this video below, Celebrity Hairstyles for New Years Eve 2010-Taylor Swift, Katherine Heigl (Part I), she demonstrate a step-by-step elegant celebrity hairstyle and how to recreate this hairstyle at home.

MoroccanOil Intensive Curl Cream Review

Earlier we reviewed MoroccanOil Treatment and talked about how the Moroccan Argan Oil works wonder for skin and hair, and now we will continue with our MoroccanOil review series and talk about the MorrocanOil Intensive Curl Cream.

We brought the curl cream into Alcheme Salon in San Francisco, where one of their most popular hairstylist Richelle De Vera showed us how to use the MoroccanOil Intensive Curl Cream to style curls — let them be permed curls or your natural curls. So here I will talk about my personal experience with the MoroccanOil Intensive Curl Cream and show you guys how Richelle De Vera used the MoroccanOil Intensive Curl Cream to style my frizzy curls.

My experience with the MoroccanOil Intensive Curl Cream

I cut my hair short around a month ago and permed it right after, but the straight roots were already going out by the time I set foot in the fabulous Alcheme Salon. I didn’t style my hair with any products or used any kind of special shampoo prior to our meeting with Richelle, so it was a big dry frizz when I sat down with her. She had never heard of the MoroccanOil Intensive Curl Cream before, but seemed very impressed by how light it was — which is also why I enjoyed the most about trying out the MoroccanOil Intensive Curl Cream. I had used different kinds of hair products before, but I always ended up giving up after a couple of days because I just hated the feeling of having grease on my hair. My main complain, however, is how it somewhat straightened my curls instead of activating them. The curls, however, did seem much more well defined after using the MoroccanOil Intensive Curl Cream. And a huge up-side: the MoroccanOil Intensive Curl Cream smells AMAZING!

Bottomline

Cons:

  • It’s a little bit on the expensive side: around $30 for 16.9oz
  • Yes, my curls are much more defined after using the MoroccanOil Curl Cream, but I was told by a friend of mine later that it looked like “mall hair in the 80’s
  • It builds up if you don’t shampoo
  • It seems to straighten permed curls instead of activating them — perhaps you wil have a different experience with natural curls
  • It only keeps curls for around 4–5 hours — good for a night out, not so sure about a work day

Pros:

  • Argan oil is famous for its ability to control frizz and hydrate your dry hair — and the MoroccanOil Intense Curl Cream does a great job in that area
  • Very easy to use — very light, not greasy at all
  • Smells really good — unlike some of curl creams I’ve tried before

Long Natural Eyelash with Latisse Review (Part 2)

We did a review of Latisse a month ago and received such a major response to this product that we are showing you week by week pictures and effects from using Latisse.   I went to my dermatologist and every single girl working in the office (including my dermatologist) had very long, thick lashes.  The entire office had been using Latisse so I got a great reference and prescription from my dermatologist!

Here is the picture of the product and contents included in the $130 package for 60 days.

DSCN1360

The package includes:

  • 60 applicators which are too harsh and rough for my eyes and soak up too much of the product into the brushes. What a great marketing ploy for Latisse to get a consumer to use more of the product and will be back to purchase more. I just use my pinky to apply the product to my lashes or put the liquid into the cap of the bottle and dip one brush for both eyes.
  • 3 ml solution of bimatoprost opthalmic solution 0.03%  (Basically, bimatoprost 0.3 mg/mL mixed with benzalkonium chloride 0.05 mg/mL, a preservative)

The dermatologist said it did not matter how much of the product was on my lashes (similar to Revitalash) but to apply everyday.

Side effects of Latisse:

  • My eyes are dark brown so I did not notice the darkening of my eyes but in clinical studies adverse side effects were a permanent darkening of irises, especially in mixed or light colored irises.
  • My eyes are extremely itchy, especially first thing in the morning.  My eyelashes are thicker but the upper lashes are much more irritated.

Here is a picture and measurement of my lashes after Week 1:

How to Get Meagan Fox’s Shiny Dark Brunette Hair

Get lushous dark brown hair like Meagan Fox

Get lushous dark brown hair like Meagan Fox

Russian and Middle Eastern beauty secrets are to use Henna purchased in the grocery store on their hair.  The cost is relatively inexpensive at under $5 for a package, make a mix of henna and water, apply to clean hair and then leave on overnight.  It is a bit of a process and takes effort but it is an inexpensive home remedy using natural ingredients and may help extend your color in between the hairdresser or add extra shine to that mysterious brunette.

Use a bit of henna as a conditioner, wrap a towel around their hair and let it soak for overnight minutes.  Then it is rinsed out and they have lovely, dark, thick hair.  For step by step instructions…

Here are the step by step process of using henna as an overnight conditioner:

1. Buy henna in a local store.  It comes in a small package of powder.  Red henna darkens brunettes but black henna will give you Goth midnight black hair.

2. Mix 1/4 to 1/2 cup of mix to same amount of water until it is a thick mud pack like consistency.

3. This part is complicated, not as much as Denise Richards but still may be a bit dirty.  Put the henna in your hair like a deep mask conditioner and wrap an old towel around your hair.    The henna will stain the towel.

4. Use this for hours or overnight.  Put another towel between your hair and your sheets in case the henna stains your sheets.

Elena, 32, Palo Alto, CA

“I am Russian and have been using this in my family for generations.  I have applied this to my hair since I was 14 about once a month, except when I was blonde and always get complements on my hair afterwards for a month.  My mom uses it to cover grey.”
