Last week we talked about Intense Pulse Light (IPL) treatment you can find at medical spas, and guess what, IPL also comes with a DIY option. MyShimmer had an exciting conversation with James Pereyra, the Chief Marketing Officer of Claro, a new IPL acne device that will be launched on October 1, 2009 at Nordstrom.

What is Claro? What makes it special?
Claro is a batter-operated portahand held IPL device that is FDA approved to treat acne with a combination of heat and light. The treatment is fast and painless — each light treatment lasts 6 seconds, and there is no acne cream or gel involved in the process. The light treatment is completely natural and has no chemicals involved. So if you have experienced itchy and flaky skin after using acne creams, Claro might be the right solution for you.
What is the science behind it?
We covered the science behind medical IPL treatment at spas and dermatologists last week, but Claro is the only device so far that is FDA approved to treat acne with IPL technology. The heat delivered by the device kills the bacteria trapped in your pores and reduces inflammation, while different wave lengths of light within visible spectrum can have different effects on the skin. Red light rejuvenates the skin and diminishes wrinkles and lines, while blue light helps to kill acne bacteria and prevent further outbreaks.
Is Claro safe?
We asked James the very same question! Since Claro is a battery-operated IPL device, the energy it generates is significantly lower than IPL equipment you can find at medical spas. The pulses of light generated by Claro is very short in duration, and is delivered to the skin in a way that targets the source of acne within the epidermis, without harming the surrounding skin.
